You are wrong. There are lots of Americans that will do labor but they can't afford to do the labor at what the illegals do it for. I have an uncle who owns a painting company. He has to legally hire workers for $10 an hour. He pays for workers comp insurance, gas, materials, advertising, liability insurance, vehicles, office materials, equipment, tools, etc. On top of all of this he has to pay uncle sam at least 30% of his earnings. He has to charge $40 an hour to break even. A team of "illegals" can come in and do the job with no insurance and paying no taxes. They can do the job for $20 an hour. Who is the homeowner going to hire? This is a major issue with jobs in America.

I personally don't care if people want to do menial work but if they don't want to work then don't give them handouts. I served in the Army. We had to do whatever. I have dug ditches, raked leaves, cleaned toilets, cooked, jumped out of airplanes, shoveled snow, etc.

I am all for helping someone when they are down but there are a lot of people sitting at home collecting welfare watching Oprah because they don't want to stock shelves or flip burgers. That is bullsh*t. I bet if we stopped sending money then more people would be working in the fields, warehouses and factories.

Funny. That has not been my experience. I was a roofer. I'm white. I started in AZ and moved to FLA and it's been my experience that companies jump at the chance to hire guys to do complex work in tough conditions at $8 to $7 an hour. If I'm charging $15 an hour to roof, well, it makes business sense to hire those who are willing to do it for a lower price. Some of the families that are legal immigrants live in conditions that Americans don't want to live in. So, they will work for any money. And companies don't want to pay top dollar for labor so, here we are. Your company gets labor at $8 an hour and your business turns a quick profit, while hard working folks like me have to find other work. And, there in lies the squeeze. We've been priced out.

But, don't act as if America does not have craftsmen who wish to work hard and feel good about their country. We are out there. We were just priced out of the labor market by bottom line companies.

Some of the people here really take the cake... Just a few weeks ago, many of them wanted to have Gen. Powell prosecuted for hiring illegal aliens (though no "proof" existed); they claimed that he should have asked the crew leader to prove to him all his employees were legal. To call an illegal immigrant "undocumented" is like saying thieves are "non-paying customers". The fact that are southern neighbors are poor and willing to work for less money does not mean that the US has no right to enforce its immigration laws, and it certainly doesn't mean that such neighbors have a right to enter US illegally when millions of Asians, Africans, Europeans would LOVE to come here, legally. Saw Lou Dobbs and the female reporter on GMA this morning. She was SO out to smear Dobbs it was almost comical. When he addressed what she first wrote as being absolutely flase, then she tried another angle. In other words, she was on a witch hunt, period. OF COURSE, she was from a liberal publication...woo hoo, sur-prize, sur-prize!

How many people would know that if they call a lawn service, and that service contracts out to different landscapers, and maybe there are illegals working for the landscaper, does that mean you hire illegals? Lou has been outspoken about the illegal immigration issue for years...some say he was really ahead of his time with the matter because many of the problems we are facing now, economically, can be attributed to the immigration issue. But I have to agree with Lou in this one. I can see how he feels with this matter. He hired a contractor who hires his workers. When you hire a contractor you should expect the workers he brings to the job to be good at what they do, not sex offenders and not illegal. Now if you're expected to walk up to each person, each day and ask for their papers (and there is no way you know they are real) nothing will get done or the job will take longer and cost more.

The contractor should be the one held responsible in this matter the home owner shouldn't (unless it can be proven the owner knew differently). But if you do multiple job estimates and one is low balled you'll have a good idea they are either no good at what they do, hiring illegals or really not paying a fair hourly wage.

In response to the Army guy who said there is nothing wrong with hard work; there isn't anything wrong with hard work and it is a virtue. At least in the military, you get room and board and health care, which is also paid for by the taxpayers. That said, it's the least we can do for our armed forces because when they have to, they make sacrifices we can't even imagine. However, there are many who are ineligible for military service because of their health or age, so where do we go. I'm also too old to pole dance and I'm no longer a size 6. Thank God I'm working again, but those months at the house were harrowing to say the least.

To those who pontificate that "it's better than nothing" if an engineer won't take a job at McDonalds have never had to do that themselves. Max unemployment compensation in Texas is roughly 1700 a month if no taxes are taken out, and if you were earning minimum wage, you aren't going to get that much. However, if I know I'm not going to even be paid a living wage for my services, then unemployment is a better deal mathematically, but not so much for one's dignity. You actually have to prove you are looking for work of you don't continue to get it. Besides, it's NOT a government handout, it's part of the payroll taxes the employer puts in for you, money that doesn't go into your wallet because they are putting that fund aside for the event that they might have to lay you off.

On top of being inconvenienced with being out of work, if you have a health condition, you can't get on the individual insurance market, and it would cost me and my spouse 1400, (almost all of the compensation) a month just to keep the insurance our jobs provided even though we aren't heavy users of it. I have a history of headaches and my meds are very expensive out of pocket. With the Republicans wanting to repeal Obamacare as they so derisively call it, the average person will continue to be at the mercy of the insurance companies who have the Republicans on their payroll.

Even though we drive modest cars, live within our means, save like mad, we would soon be broke. Some states provide health care along with their unemployment. Pennsylvania does, and several others do as well, but good look getting any help in Texas if your circumstances suddenly change.

Dobbs became so strident and offensive in his latter days at CNN that it was clear he would have to go eventually. His polemics were far beyond the pale, and although he consistently denied it, Dobbs certainly inspired hatred toward Hispanics.

And by the way, the investigative news project did not just include the reporter but an independent organization, too. There was extensive confirmation of the work before it went to print. Consider why Dobbs does not DARE to file a libel suit - the evidence in the courtroom would strangle him.

If I buy a piece of concrete yard art from a retailer in Los Angeles, and Ms McDonald investigates that some of the workers in the concrete yard in Waco Texas were illegal, does that make me guilty of hiring an illegal and being a hypocrit? Turning a blind eye and claiming they do not know is a Republican ploy to use cheap Mexican labor while whining about immigrants flooding our country. An example: I live in a large full service gated condo complex in Florida with a very sophisticated board. Management contracts with a landscape company that puts dozens of Mexicans to work on the grounds each week. I asked management whether they required the company to certify that they did not use illegals. Management's response was instructive: no, they do not ask, the law does not require that they ask, and if they imposed that requirement "costs would go up" so they don't ask. Most of my neighbors are upper income Republicans who listen to Dobbs and Glenn Beck and whine about the immigrant problem.... so they are hypocrites!

I'm not fond of Dobbs, but this is an unfair thing to attack him on. Sure, in theory one should know if their contractors are hiring illegal immigrants. But people don't ask, hell once hired many barely speak to them again.

You hit the nail on the head. We have lots of difficult, seasonal work that no one wants to do. Because it is part-time or seasonal, it pays minimum wage (if that), and has no benefits or often even no days off except when it rains. This is true not only of roofing, but of most agricultural harvest work. It's not that people don't want the jobs, but to be very honest, I would never work as a roofer and endure the danger and discomfort for what it pays. It's honest labor but highly undervalued.

In the case of agricultural workers, local labor is just never sufficient to do the job. Child labor laws and child education laws from the states have pretty much put an end to the old migrant labor force that used to rove around the country. As much as 70% of some crops rot in the fields each year because of labor shortages. Some crops, such as peaches and grapes MUST be picked by hand. Other crops, such as tomatoes and beans can be machine-picked, but the machines miss as much as 40-50% of the crop, so even then hand-picking is useful and economical.

What we need is a Guest Worker program that allows immigrants to come to this country and work for direct wages (no withholding except a fixed percentage federal and/or state income tax) for six months out of every year. They get no refunds on the income tax, but also pay no social security or Medicare taxes. The federal minimum wage would be required and in the case of migrant pickers, decent living conditions and occupational safety would be required.

Illegal immigration is a very complex issue and usually very much misrepresented. For example, did you know that of the top 10 cities with the lowest crime rates, 4 are in border states and have some of the largest percentages of illegal immigrants? If a man wants to work and is willing to take jobs that are set up so that they do not steal work from legitimate Americans and are not illegal, everyone wins.

Even though a replacement host that sub for him showed proof of Obama's birth certificate he did his next show about Obama's birth certificate being false. My very first "real" job was a bagger at a grocery store - doesnt sound hard, until you consider I started at 4.25/hr and worked 40 hrs a week and the bulk of that was fri-sunday, and I had to take groceries to the car. In the summer and winter, that is extremely difficult work because of going in and out of extreme temps over and over and over again. On top of that, this was before the modern bottle return machines (for states that actually recycle) and I had to work the bottle returns - during the summer months the "room" where all the bottles were taken to to be inserted into the machines that "crushed them" for easier transport was on average 110 degress, and the stink from the pop bottle machines was enough to make you vomit - and I would work in there for HOURS, while battling bee's...that was hard work, not in the same sense of other jobs...but compared to the "office jobs" most of us have...it was definitely not a desirable job, especially at that wage.

that was my job to save up for college...im only 31 and I was 18 when I got that job. that was 1997. If kids today wont work hard for a minimum wage, its because their parents have made them rotten with their arrogant attitudes about work.

Wealthy people like Dobbs have the option of indirectly hiring illegal immigrants. The man is perfectly capable of hiring his own workers, and he is perfectly capable of hiring a manager to supervise those workers for him--and yet, what does he do? He contracts out.

Now, why would a man contract out work that he could--at least theoretically--do less expensively on his own? Because if he hires the company, then they are liable for hiring the illegal workers. Did he know they were illegal? Well, he didn't ask them. That's the whole point--the man's wealth gives him the ability to hire someone else who essentially is willing to go to jail for him if the scheme is caught. Though, realistically, what will happen is that the people who own the company will say that they just had a "rogue" employee, whom they fire, and then they pinky-swear that they will not do it again, and they get off completely.

People, this is called "plausible deniability." Wealthy people (and they don't have to be Republican, but a lot of them are) have plenty of ways of getting around the law; it saddens me to see so many people looking at the "letter" of the law, making excuses for Dobbs, and calling the rest of us fools when this is the whole point that he is meeting the letter of the law, but not the intent. Wealth gives Dobbs the opportunity to hire the accountants that let him circumvent the laws, the contracters who let him circumvent the laws, and the employees who are willing to take the hit for him if he gets caught.

They then turn around and try to nail "illegal" immigrants and "criminal" welfare "cheats" for not being savvy enough to do exactly what they want while still technically abiding by the law. Workers are allowed in from Mexico, they just have to get temporary visas--do they know how? Probably not. That's the point. They would probably apply for the visas if they knew how and if the process were streamlined. This is what George W. Bush wanted to do with the "guest worker" program--which is actually well within the boundary of pre-existing law--but all of you screamed. Why is it that when poor people are being given the chance to meet the law, there are scream fests, but when rich people barely "meet" the law, we have extended rationalizations on their behalf?

People hire employment agencies to review work papers and documentation. It is the employment agency's job to vet these documents. That is why they are hired and are paid a fee to handle this work.

people like you make want to buy an aluminum bat, ill say no more on that part, however i too did work for a roofing company, in the late 80's, as well a construction company, AND, even gave my hand at landscapeing, NOT1 person on any roof i was on was hispanic. may have had a dark as heck tan, just like the rest of those jobs i worked, we all did, but not 1 was a hispanic, and this was in SE Wisconsin.

Additionally, it's wonderful when you folks say that the root of all these troubles began with a Democratically-controlled Congress starting in 2006, when this downturn was in full spin before 2006 (2007, actually) had even arrived. I spend months unemployed, not because I am lazy or because I enjoyed making all that money on unemployment (give me a break), but because a great deal of the work that I do has been shipped overseas or is done by people that are willing to come over here and work for a fraction of what the job is worth (and, for the most part, they are bad at it, but at least they're cheap!). Democrats are not outside of blame for this historically, but when a bill was recently introduced to eliminate those tax breaks and reward companies for keeping jobs here, who blocked it? Reporter: avoiding the issue of real responsibility and lack of tools that enable Lou to do what she suggests he should. Her agenda: keep the spotlight on her while she makes "undocumented suggestions" about what Lou should have done.

I sort of have to admire Lou's devious ability to avoid inconveniences - when asked to admit that Obama has done more for border security than Bush ever did he deftly panned right over it... would it really have pained him that much to admit to this (especially seeing as how that's what he SAYS he wants)?

Lou is correct as far as the law is concerned, he hired subcontractors, which are their own companies. The landscaping company he hired, for instance, hires their own workers and Lou has nothing to do with the hiring process. So, technically he did nothing illegal.

What he did was, however, immoral. Turning the other cheek and just not investigating so that you can claim ignorance when questioned is immoral. In college football, they would call this lack of institutional control. It is a fact well known to Lou that a large percentage of the landscaping industy employees are illegal immigrants. Intentionally avoiding the truth and reality so that you can say you didn't know later on is immoral. He could have easily ensured that either the company he hired did not use illegal immigrants, or easily found a different company to hire that did not use illegal immigrant labor. You are absolute correct, how is he to now. Lets take it one step further. A large employer hires a large group of Hispanic workers, their paperwork seems all in order. A month later the INS raids the company and finds that many of the documents are forged. How was he to know? So how to illegals get into this country, get jobs, pay taxes, get a Social Security number? By forging many of their documents. And yet, when a proposal is put forth to provide everyone with a national, non forge able ID card, everyone talks about Big Brother and won't even discuss it. The Social Security Card was supposed to be the national ID card but it is too easy to fake. Lets come up with a better solution and them we can hold the right people responsible and provide a pathway for citizenship for those who deserve it.

If they use a fake SSN, the Justice Dept says "Hey, we never assigned that number to anyone, now suddenly there is a 30 year old guy with it....ILLEGAL" How easy is that? Or the more prevalent offense, stolen SSN. I fill out I-9, they say "Hey someone is already using that SSN, it must be stolen...ILLEGAL" Some people's stolen SSN's are used by almost ONE HUNDRED different people!! Do you know how this happened? The EMPLOYERS of these hundred illegal immigrants circumvented the legal process for hiring, and OUR state and federal governments ALLOW them to get away with this. It is a very simple process, and it works.

I think getting Dobbs on your show is a win and to have him defend himself instead of just blank rhetoric is great.

The report was about the lack of documentation of people hired by Dobbs. A nice try to point the profiling finger at Democrats though but it's the conservatives that want to profile. They want to profile anyone that looks like Mexican in Arizona or anyone that looks Muslim that wants to buy a plane ticket.

the landscaper was not fooled by forged or stolen documents, the landscaper is not the entity that verifies such information. The federal Justice Department verifies legal status of potential employees.

So, how did the Justice Department get fooled by the forged or stolen documents? They never saw them, thats how. The landscaper circumvented the simple free and legal process of employee verification, and never submitted the documents. Employers are required by law to use the I-9 form to verify the legal status of potential employees, the owner of the landscaping company is a criminal. It is just a law that is seldom enforced.

Had the landscaping company done proper legal process, they would have been informed that the workers they are trying to hire are not legal citizens, and the company would not have been allowed to employ them. Then LEGAL americans would have gotten the work, paid taxes and insurances, etc. Heaven forbid that we give legal american citizens work!

To intentionally not check so that he can plead ignorance when confronted by it is immoral, especially considering HIS very vocal and publicly known opinion on the subject. Is he at fault according to the law? No. Is he at fault when you consider MORALS? Yes, quite so. It was in his power to find out the truth and he intentionally made no effort to do so. He easily could have CHOSEN to find out, and either insisted they not use illegal labor, or found a different company that would. Finding a loophole in the law to clear you of legal responsibility for your choices does not mean you are necessarily right.

Whitman's husband knew there were problems with Nicky Diaz's documents as early as 2003, but did nothing about it. I'm not sure what the liberals had to do with the Whitman's turning a blind eye to their illegal problem, but interesting nonetheless that Whitman and Dobbs are associated on this board.

Wellllll..if you ACTUALLY read the news and not let some liberally biased reporter spoon feed you your news you would have understood with the wittman thing. They hired a part time domestic (approx. 15 hr per week) from a employment agency (THEY are suppost to check the legality of said employee..thats what the client is paying for and convienence).

Nicky Diaz gave the employment agency:

1. another persons social security number ( a cousins number)

2.a state id card (you not suppost to be able to get that or a drivers license without proving citizenship)

3.w2 form (how do you get a w2 form unless you have worked for a previous employer?)

In 2003 the social security admin sent a form that is a "further information required form" (can't remember the number but I thing is SS/99 ). The form SPECIFICALY says that if the information on that form is used to "terminate, layoff or reduce hours/benefits" it is a violation of law and the employer can be prosecuted.

Mr. Wittman was confused as to why they would sent it to them since it was information Nicky needed to provide, he wrote on the form "nicky this needs your attn. please see to it." She worked from 2000-2009 for the wittmans. They would have had to assume since they heard nothing further after 2003 that it had been 'taken care of". However when Mrs. Wittman announced her intention to run for office, nicky informed them that despite what she had claimed for 9 yrs. she was indeed "illegal".

Not wanting to break the law..ESPECIALLY since she was running for office they (in tears) informed her that they couldn't employ her anymore and terminated her. Now from all respects the facts have came out about her employment, and she seemd to have a sweet deal..he worked part time for 15 hr a week, with totally flexable hrs. that she chose because of her childrens school hrs. and Dr. appt etc., she was paid $23 hr. And was considered a part of the family and received regular bonuses and gifts.

Now were in that would you figure the Wittmans were that bad ones?..they paid her well, treated her well, and only terminated her after they were informed that she had been betraying them for 9 yrs. and was breaking the law.

Nicky lied on at a minimum of 3 documents to the employment agency and at least 2 to the social security admin. She lied on at least 2 forms to the Wittmans. She lied for at least 9 yrs.(granted by omission) to the Wittmans and only confessed when she KNEW she was going to get caught.

So how does this all come to light? Gloria Allred. She used a illegal alien to try and blacken Meg Whittman's name during a election campaign. She is suppost to represent Nicky Diez..and yet had her admit on national T.V, that she was illegal...having her client incriminate herself. Can you not at least wonder about the timing? She was fired in 2009 and yet it wasn't until 1 1/2 weeks before a crucial debate on Univision (a T.V. channel that caters to hispanics) in 2010...a whole yr. and miraculously it was 1 1/2 weeks before a debate hmm.

Gloria Allred ,when she was a younger woman actually worked on Jerry Browns campaign as a campaign worker..then has contributed to every one of Jerry Brown's campaigns over the yrs. Can you at least be a LITTLE sceptical about A. the timing B. the source C. and the facts as they present them when documents turn up to contridict Gloria's assertions, she has a long history of "specious" claims against others.

Huh? An employer is legally required to document citizenship status and can verify status with USCIS through E-Verify. It has nothing to do with profiling--unless you're suggesting an employer violate the law by only documenting Hispanics. I'm not certain what Dobbs did as far as who he was responsible for hiring but you're not helping your argument by spouting ignorance of the legal requirements.

JENNJ, what is e-verify going to do for an employer if the thieving illegal has purchased a set of false docs.... social security card, drivers license with photo, etc., which connect the illegal's face with the name of the person who had his identity stolen? This is such a pervasive problem that I cannot imagine it will be resolved UNLESS all illegals are deported, and that includes the deportation of all illegals brought in by their thieving con-artist parents when they were just babies or toddlers.

Didn't like this interview, it just didn't work for me. I would suggest that what she was doing was good journalism. She was checking her sources, verifying her information before publishing it. I would rather her take a year before making this information public than to publish something in six weeks that can be fact checked in twenty minutes and proven false.

Dobbs has made illegal immigration the core of his dialogue for quite some time. That's where the problem comes in: if you're going to make a name (and plenty of money) for yourself pushing the issue, it would be wise to make sure you're not living in a glass house.

Good point, MICHAEL. I had a discussion about this issue several days ago with an engineer with whom I teach, and who had a position with Home Depot several years ago. Specifically, I asked him what right I have to check all employees brought into my home by a contractor for the purpose of finishing my basement, because I do not want illegals scoping out my home to return a couple of weeks later to burglarize it.

This engineer told me that I can put into my contract that each and every employee brought in to work in my home must be individually bonded. He said that will take care of the potential problem of illegals hired by an independent contractor working on my job.

It doesn't matter if anyone can prove anything... The facts show that he had illegals working for him, indirectly or not. He didn't bother to check. We are finding more and more that rich elitists are hiring illegals whether they know it or not, and the blame should be attributed to them for not checking. The truth is, if a band of illegals can roof your house for $1500 vs Americans for $3,000, guess who gets more work? And the rich who oppose illegals are just as guilty for hiring them.... I can't believe that someone actually thinks that on any Fox news/channel/program theere is a requirement to speak/write/report the truth and back it up with facts. When I'm bored with watching news I sometimes turn to Fox and am astounded by the 180 degree difference in the reports being aired.
