Last night, Lawrence asked you to come up with a better name than Operation Odyssey Dawn. As some of your rightly pointed out, the name now sounds more like the name of a stripper or a cruise ship. The rules of naming this operation — as laid down by the Pentagon — require that the first word begin with O. The second word must start with A through F. Between the blog, Facebook and Twitter, we got in tons of ideas. Here are some of our many favorites:
- Operation Oil Deal — @some sanity please via The Last Word blog
- Operation Obvious Fiasco — @christian athiest via The Last Word blog
- Operation Outdo Bush — @Sally and James via The Last Word blog
- Operation Oy, Again? — @Reina Greenwald via The Last Word blog
- Operation Obliterate Dictator — @Jane Shasserre Mills via Facebook
- Operation Obama's Downfall — @Leonard Pianin via Facebook
- Operation Over Dose — @Linda Karosic via Facebook
- Operation Overthrowing Dictator — @lraglan via Twitter
- Operation Obama Clinton — @JeanBolduc via Twitter
- Operation Over Fast — @Flo_rinse via Twitter
- Operation Obsessive Diversion — @UrquhartMP via Twitter
- Operation Of Doom — @misselisebrown via Twitter

Operation Obscene Dictator
I truly donot have a problem with the decision our POTUS made ...we cannot repeat the past by backing away from the innocent asking for help...america cannot hold all with problems in their homeland. I have no problem with NATO and Turkey and Russia handling the situation of stopping a murder from terrorizing a nation. I do not want to have that dream about a baby in the middle of road crying and news crew driving away with no care. Do something
People seem to forget, or don't care about, our own history. When that wacky group of colonists decided to revolt against England they had help....wait for it...France. Not only money but military aid. So when you complain about the US and other countries helping to overthrow a dictator remember France is a big reason why we can celebrate the 4th of July.
Sorry LOD - I didn't know you wanted just funny names...wish you would have read a few of the more provocative or legitimate ones one the air.
You did get a lot of contributions - not all were funny.
Operation Onrushing Conundrum?
Oozing Credibility?
Obnoxious Fellow?
Openeyed crapshoot?
May I suggest that this has become Operation Overdone Obnoxiousness by the Last Word - can we get back to what is important!
This is a little unrelated, but Lawrence, could you stop spending so much of your show time talking about Glenn B., it is a waste of your intelligence, and a waste of our time, we want you to discuss relevant news ... it's no use being serious with such a seriously disturbed guy ... the more you talk about GB, the more fans you're losing. Thank you!
Operation Owl Barrage
Ocurring Dawn maybe? Has more symbolism in it.
Operation Oh Dynamite!
OPERATION "Overt Dacnomania"
— Dan Francis (Watertown, NY)
While I usually agree with you, Larry, I have to disagree with you on this issue. The principle that an operation's name should have little to do with the operation has been part of military policy since, at least, World War II. For example, the beach names on D-Day, were Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. They conveyed no information about the purpose of the operations. While you probably remember that Operation Overlord referred to D-Day, do you know what Flintlock, Dragoon, Olympic and Coronet referred to?
Winston Churchill, himself, a person who is recognized as a expert on the use of English, weighed in on this subject. You can find his thoughts in David Kahn's book, "The Codebreakers."
So what about Bush's "Operation Iraqi Freedom" and "Operation Enduring Freedom" ? Seems those weren't just random.
I am trying to enter a URL for the Churchill quote but apparently your system is not letting me. Here we go again.
