Grover Norquist and Jack Abramoff (file)
A lot has been written up lately about Grover Norquist as the debt-limit talks continue to make limited progress. Grover is the man Republicans in Washington continue to stand by as the country inches closer to an economic calamity.
Republicans in Congress will not budge on raising revenues knowing that Grover has their original signed copy of the Americans for Tax Reform pledge locked up in a fireproof vault. Ninety-five percent of Republicans in Congress signed it and Grover's iron grip on all of them has never been so fully on display, therefore gaining a lot more scrutiny in the media. However, in another moment of #nostralawrence, our show has been calling Grover "the most powerful man in Washington that doesn't live in the White House" for a while now. He has even been a guest on our show!
Well, yesterday, Grover took to Twitter to vent his frustration on the debt-limit talks by tweeting the following:

Yes, the dude who reinforces billionaires' arms over their bags of money is calling people greedy. The dude who passionately protects the incomes of hedge fund managers, Wall Street bankers, corporate jet owners and oil/ethanol profiteers. The dude who wants to prevent the slightest increase in their taxes or any changes to deductions or subsidies is calling people greedy.
If you were to ever think of a caricature of greed in Washington you might actually think of this guy: lobbyist Jack Abramoff. It turns out that Grover and Abramoff are good old pals going back to their days in the College Republicans. Documents in the federal probe of the Abramoff scandal revealed Grover "allowed his nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, Americans for Tax Reform, to be used as a pass-through for money that Abramoff's clients handed over to finance lobbying campaigns aimed at influencing public officials. For his trouble, Norquist kept a cut of the funds."
Making a profit off of peddling influence over a government by using your nonprofit, tax-exempt organization — that's greedy.

Republicans keep talking about some mythical promise they made to the American public to maintain taxes for the rich and in this, they got elected. All while ducking the real promise they made which was to restore lost jobs! We have had ten years now of their Bush tax cuts for the rich and are now experiencing the net results of it. I will not forget or forgive this organization for the damages they have brought on their fellow citizens, all in the name of partisan politics. Lost jobs, lost homes, lost pensions, all while the top 1% experienced maximum profits for their exported jobs investments. What we should have is a 20% sur-tax on non-essential imported goods until our unemployment numbers drop below 7.5%.
Dear People,
"Norquist and the coalition he represents stand for a principle that in its natural conclusion can only lead our state and federal governments to default on their debts. States across the country are in a similar position; however, no other state wields the same economic power as California. So, California needs additional revenue soon if it is to continue succeeding in providing the property rights protection it so ably does. Without sufficient revenue and taxes are where governments get their revenue, California will default. America will likely follow.
Norquist imagines America where taxes get lower and lower every year. Once they are zero… he does not address this. He wishes to be “free of federal and state labor laws” (xxi). What to do when faced with an abusive or exploitative employer is not addressed by the ideology. Instead, liberty with the help of Jesus will fix this problem. One problem the pledge cannot fix becomes apparent the longer one considers the impact and the goal: once all tax rates reach zero, a flat tax (as is commonly proposed in place of income, estate and other taxes by libertarians) would not- could not- be enacted, voted upon, or even proposed because that would be in violation of the pledge. California/America needs and deserves better than a soft dominionist-style theonomy."
Just sayin'.

What's Grover going to do to them if they break their pledge? Give them a wedgie? For crying out loud, these grade-schoolers need to grow up and remember that they took an oath of office that overrides any club pledges.
Grover boy came from a wealthy family and knows little about the people his policies would harm. Here's a new article on him: . I still remember his reply to Colbert when asked if he was willing to let grandmothers die in order to cut taxes, e.g. Medicare. Grover replied that we could console ourselves with the fact that we have their pictures. This man is inhumane.
AMAZING EPIC LEVELS OF INSANITY WE HAVE REACHED! It doesn't amaze me how the rich are trying to hold on to everything they have, what amazes me is how they have convinced the little guy to help them do it!!!
Grover Norquist is an interesting figure who seems oddly powerful for a man who was given this job by Reagan. There were no interesting compliments nor positions he held prior to this just being a well connected friend of Karl Rove and the possession of dual degrees from Harvard seem to be his only skill set. His ATR is largely funded by the Republican party itself which is used to bully or extort this agreement from "at risk" GOP candidates up for election.
Very bizarre that a man in charge of a non-profit org has such power and influence demanding pledges from elected officials and then holding them to compliance without any investigations or fallback from the Abramhoff scandal. Means Mr. Norquist has seriously good and well connected friends in powerful places. I certainly would love to extract pledges from Democrats to commit to Progressive ideals but I guess I didn't go to Harvard.
And how did a man who has never stood for election come to be the power in this country? Because we have allowed it. The last time this kind of crisis was at hand, a smiliar man stood on the brink of history and sold his line of politics to a country paying 3 million deutchmarks for a loaf of bread and stand in lines after massive unemployment. He brought us World War II and the Holocaust by promising the people full employment and a return to world domination. The past rememberances of Adolf Hitler and the similarities to Grover Norquist should make your hair stand on end. Grover Norquist represents no one but the secret rich... did you vote for him? Well neither did the people of Germany vote for Hitler. The Reichstag appointed him Chancellor... and you know the rest of the story...
The source of all this insanity in the RepubliCON party and the Radical Right . . .
is that you cannot spend day after day and decade after decade . . .
defending lies, lies and more lies about . . .
racism and keeping people of color from gaining political power,
stealing tax dollars from hard working people and giving them to the wealthy,
using God as a weapon and Jesus as a mascot,
tearing down the middle class,
and engaging in economic terrorism
along with many other treasonous activities . . .
and stay sane.

Bill Moyer and PBS did an excellent series on the Jack Abramoff scandal called "Capitol Crimes".. Check out, great look at the lobbying industry.
When you don't know if you can count on what someone says you ask them to put pen to paper so you can prove they said it. There must be an immense lack of trust clouding the Republicans. What with all the pledges that are being signed, do they need to sign the oath of office they verbally agreed to uphold, so that it has as much meaning to them as, say, a pledge to a lobbyist?
In all my years, I have never seen greed and self-interest like this.
Well when you have a grover and a rush ruling the republican party as they do, what can you expect ? Grover had better be careful he has a muslim wife and rush, well rush owns part of Clear Channel and takes home $35 million a year, notice he is only working 4 days a week. Who wouldn't sell to the devil for that gig?
