The man who brought us the iPod, iPad and those tiny white "buds" that snugly tuck inside ears is stepping down from his position as Apple CEO. Steve Jobs formally announced his resignation today, sending shock-waves through the tech and business world.
Jobs turned Apple from a nearly broke computer company into one of the most powerful companies in the world. He has suffered from ill health on-and-off in recent years, which required extended medical leave to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant.
Tim Cook, the company's Chief Operating Officer is taking over as CEO. The change takes effect immediately.
Apple confirmed Jobs was elected board chairman and Cook is becoming a member of its board.
Here's the full text of his resignation letter:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Truly the end of an era. Thoughts on his departure? Leave a comment in the space below or hit me up on Twitter.

I really do not care much about which CEO is leaving which company. Sorry.
Calling Steve Jobs a CEO is about on par with calling Babe Ruth an outfielder.
Now I am watching the segment on the "fringe goes mainstream". I do not think so. Perry the trickster is not my cup of tea. He have tricked a lot of maybe well meaning Repuppies to believe his rhetoric. Their base is completely brainwashed so well, that they feel they do not have to educate themselves on real facts. They accept every thing their leaders tell them. No logic applied and no substance to decipher.
I know someone who tried to get into one of the Repub. town hall meetings and she was not accepted because she needed her phone with her. She was going to ask a question and her husband is in the hospital so she did not want to part with her phone. She did not go in, but I am glad it happened because she and her husband are thinking not to vote Republican any more.
The unsettling news segment on foreclosures. Bank of America has been having problems for a long time. Their demise has been expected. But I believe as Mr. Salmon. Not all the 50 states attorney general are into prosecuting any bank specially when they think Wall Street is our most trusted friend.
Steve Jobs is a true computer pioneer. He could recognize the potential for a good product. He has a sustained commitment to quality that literally made Apple what it was early on and what it is today. One can only imagine what his impact might have been had his long tenure at Apple not been interrupted by people with less talent and foresight. Bill Gates is very, very smart. Steve Jobs is a genius. We can only hope that his legacy will continue to live on at the world's number one computer company.
Jobs is clearly a genius. Hope he looks into research being done with bloodroot and cancer. Bless him bless him
If modern medicine did not take care of Jobs cancer. Folks should use modern techonology Apple, Iphones, twitter, FAcebook etc to start a world wide prayer/meditation circle for this genius who has brought us so much. I am praying for the dude
I write this from an aging Mac G4 tower that, loaded with plenty of RAM, an accelerator, and two big hard drives, still drives fine on the Internet Highway, and I note it is several years older than Windows XP platforms that compromise much of the traffic.
Only because videos sometimes appear herky jerky am I in the market for a slightly newer model with dual processors, and my guess is my computer needs will soon be met by such a "dinosaur" for years to come. Of course "dinosaur" is what some yayhoo called my first PowerMac I purchased on a wholesale clearance just as Jobs rejoined Apple. He kept touting the virtues of his Compaq (remember them?).
I don't own an iPhone or iPad (just an even older iBook), and I don't feel a need for either (particularly with my middle-aged eyes). But I'm certain their existence is proof of the mark Jobs left on our world. Bill Gates may be remembered in the same vein as Rockefeller or Vanderbilt, but Steve Jobs will acknowledged as a peer of Edison, Carver, or possibly even Da Vinci....
