In the latest edition of Repealing The 20th century, wife beaters are getting off free in Kansas.
The city of Topeka hasn't been prosecuting people suspected of domestic violence for the past month. City and county officials are caught up in a fight over who's supposed to pay for it, giving a get out of jail free card to domestic abusers.
Last month, Shawnee County district attorney Chad Taylor decided his office would no longer take legal action against those suspected of misdemeanors, which includes domestic violence. He credited a 10-percent budget cut as the rationale behind ditching these cases, effective immediately.
Taking an even more drastic step, next week city officials plan "fix" the problem by voting on a measure to change city code banning domestic battery. That could potentially force the county to pick up their slack.
The county continues to argue it's not in their jurisdiction to do so.
Red tape and its best, all while victims are currently turned away and their attackers ride off into the sunset.

Why are we always letting Kansas hijack our politics and national debates with this kind of foolishness? Like a child starved for attention and just doing the outrageous things to get any attention at all.
Because if one state moves backwards by a political party - successfully - others will follow.
This is the dawning of the age of theocracy, at the expense of democracy. How many states lined up and followed the example of Wsiconsin, successfully.
I can understand that but why did the people of Kansas let it happen? Do you live in Kansas? The dawn of theocracy, had already started in Kansas (abortion murders) and if you think we have a working democracy then I believe you are sadly mistaken. This issue will be bought and sold by our two ruling parties like every other issue we have. Mark my words they are going to ask for money to campaign against the very stupidity that they started. Watch and see
Just like Wisconsin, there the friends of the working class and supporting the unions is what they tell us to get our votes and money yet where are the manufacturing unions. They sold us out and only look for the support of the public and service sector unions while they sign free trade agreements and remove tariffs sending union manufacturing jobs overseas. The politicians slant the public viewpoint to suit thier goals and we follow like cattle. We shouldn't allow them to distract us while they steal the country with such crap
The people of KS likely did not hear about it or were unaware, as was I till I ran across this story recently. As backwards as KS is... there are many I believe who would fight for this if possible. There is a petition just started in fact to try and do something about it at signon.org (listed as Topeka Kansas City Council Considers Decriminalizing Domestic Violence to Save Money) Help spread the word and get signatures... Some do try and fight for right :-(
I live in Kansas.....lovingly referred to by many residents as "Brownbackistan".....where the few "moderate" Republicans we have left are already being challenged in the next primary by the tea party thugs. Problem is....people in this state are so......uninformed.....that they think this is a great thing! Brownback (Governor of Ks) is the ONLY governor to attend Pastor Perry's prayer vigil in September....
There have been so many cuts to social services and education....hard to say what will happen next! Remember who owns this state.....the Koch's!!
So what is your solution to the cuts? Just keep spending and spending until Kansas goes bankrupt? Where does it end? I don't like to see social services and education cut either but the costs of those programs (mostly salaries) have skyrocketed. What is needed is across the board cuts in pay and benefits for all state and local government workers. Those cuts should especially be applied to 100+k police and fire employees. That good old boys club needs a reality check. They need feel a little pinch like the rest of us who are feeling the pain.

Sounds like Republicans have never heard of this quote.
OMG . . .amazing post Crackhead Awards !
News Flash : Drowning in ignorance, hate, selfishness, lies and fascism . . . the Right-Wing Republicon S.S. TEATANIC sank into oblivion in 2011/2012.
History will show that they were sunk by their own evil deeds.
When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.
so that finish that quote? it makes sense now as i read one of the cult troll sock puppet leaders use it but only the first part.
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.
but then again it likes to use lots of quotes from Jefferson and others, and as usual only cherry picked parts.
thats why you can not trust the quotes all the way.
Why did Topeka ever need this city ordinance making Domestic Violence a misdemeanor? Is domestic violence legal once you leave the city limits? It sounds in the media coverage as if this ordinance was NEVER enforced because the county DA was charging people with some other misdemeanor and since he's stopping all misdemeanor prosecution due to his budget cuts prosecution of those arrested for domestic violence falls to city prosecutors. The city council is considering repeal of the ordinance, again for budget reasons (?), to force the county DA to prosecute because there will be no alternative except releasing the accused. What happens to those who commit domestic violence within Shawnee county but outside Topeka?
